Bluebonnets! Bluebonnets! Bluebonnets!

An update to my earlier wildflower post. I was driving east on US 290 yesterday evening as twilight began to give way to dusk, windows down and Bob Dylan's "Visions of Johanna" blaring from my stereo, when to the right (south of the highway) I noticed five or six of the biggest, thickest bluebonnet fields I've ever seen. Seas of bluebonnets like I've never seen, not even in Fredericksburg. Several drivers had pulled over at various spots to take pictures.

You can find these fields just west of noted speed trap and sausage town Chappell Hill, after Brenham (or before Brenham if you're coming from Texas). These fields are closer to Chappell Hill.

While we're at it, the wildflowers are really in full bloom all along US 290 between Austin and Hempstead. Lots of buttercups, bluebonnets, winecups, coreopsis, and paintbrush (actually, I've been a little disappointed at the paintbrushes this year-not so thick as previous years). Looking forward to the later appearance of sunflowers, mexican hats, and indian blankets.

Also, you can click on this link to where people have been posting their own Texas wildflower sightings.

ETA: there's also an abundance of bluebonnets, and other wildflowers, surrounding and in Memorial Park in Houston. I will post pictures to flickr when I return to Austin tomorrow night.
